Soliphilia is compassion towards all living creatures, solidarity to the whole, everything, and helpfulness and caring about everybody. Soli comes from the word solidarity, philia from the terms created by other philosophers such as E.O. Wilson’s concept biophilia and Tuan’s concept topophilia, which means love for a place. Where are you, Soliphilia? depicts the search for the above mentioned good and exemplary hope and strength that preserves life, from all corners of the world, without finding it.

Paikan nostalgiaa / Nostalgia of the place, 2013 video, 7.05 min.

Nostalgia termi tulee kreikankielisistä sanoista nostos (kotiinpaluu) ja algos (kipu, tuska) ja suoraan käännettynä se tarkoittaa koti-ikävää. Earlier nostalgia was an illness comparable to melancholy, describing a state where the patient was far away from home and wanted to return there. Nowadays, homesickness is no longer regarded as an illness or as a state that leads to problems. The meaning of the term nostalgia has, therefore, changed completely from an illness that should be taken seriously into a longing and frivolous daydreaming.

We talk about feeling nostalgia for old places when we mean that we admire old times and have a kind of “memories grow sweeter with time” attitude. In the Nostalgia of the place video, I portray an old tree, our family’s holy tree. That tree represents to me everything that I have seen and experienced in the yard that surrounds that tree; gladness, joy, sadness, longing, homesickness.

Written environment / Welcome to Tampere, 2014, video, 9.12 min.

Maailman sanotaan olevan yhä enemmän visuaalinen, mutta kaupunkitila luo enenevässä määrin melusaastetta. In that spot there is an ancient graveyard, a burial place, which is also called lapinraunio in Finnish. The place was once a sacred place by the lake. Over time, however, it was forgotten until archaeologists surveyed the area and found the place. Today, there are signs to indicate an ancient history of the place.

In the video I wanted to show that in the midst of urban nature there may be items that have been important to the ancient inhabitants of the area and therefore worth retaining also today. Our world and values have changed and are still constantly changing, but the knowledge of historical places can increase respect for the places and the desire to preserve them.

Pain, 2012, video, 2.17 min.

Video kuvaa omakohtaista kokemusta siitä, minkälaista on edää kroonisen kivun kanssa.

The video shows a personal experience of what it’s like to live with a chronic pain.

Solastalgia, 2011 videoinstallaatio kolmella projektorilla, 3.30 minuuttia (loop)

Videoinstallaatio Solastalgialla olen halunnut tuoda katsojalle vahvan kokemuksen tunteesta, jonka rakkaan paikan menettäminen voi aiheuttaa.
